Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has in ten years developed a model that is one of the best examples in the world of how to scale up energy efficiency. Starting with its UJALA programme that distributes LEDs on a pay as you save model the company has now deployed over 370 million LEDs and driven down the cost of LED lamps from about $7 to $0.7 a lamp. EESL has also installed, and controls, over 10 million LED street lights.
The company, which is sponsored by four big utilities and the Ministry of Power in India is now applying its market aggregation approach to new areas including; electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, efficient motors, high efficiency air conditioners, appliances, trigeneration and smart meters. India plans to roll out more than 200 million mobile phone enabled smart meters in the next few years which will greatly reduce the estimated $30 billion losses in the Distribution Companies (Discoms). EESL has formed a JV with the National Indian Infrastructure Fund to lead the smart meter roll-out. EESL has shown the world that energy efficiency can be scaled up and is now working to apply the model in other markets including Thailand, Malaysia and The Middle East.
EnergyPro is proud to be the partner of EESL in our JV, EPAL, which owns a number of companies including Edina, the market leader in Combined Heat and Power and flexible distributed generation. We congratulate EESL on their 10th birthday and look forward to continue to work with them in the UK, India and elsewhere.
